Specifications of Foundry Filter Used for Iron and Iron Alloy Casting


Our modern day lifestyle is very much dependent on metals. Purification of molten iron is very necessary as it is helpful in effective casting of iron.

Many iron foundries purchase foundry filter required for purification of molten iron from different manufacturers. However, most manufacturers maintain a standard specification for production of foundry filter, which are important. Ensuring these standards enhance better performance of this product which is used widely by various ferrous metal alloy industries. In order to procure good quality product from your manufacturer you need to check various specifications. These specifications are mainly various properties of the ceramic filters which manufacturer must strictly follow. According to the recommendations of different industry experts, filter must have at least the minimum standard specification for porosity, compression strength, bulk density, thermal resistance, etc.

Minimum Standard Specifications for Foundry Filter

Each foundry filter must bear the specific properties which manufacturers need to follow. Maintaining these properties ensure high quality performance of the filters and thereby making the whole process of purification, better and cost effective. Here are important specifications recommended for foundry filter:

Guidelines for porosity (%): Porosity percentage is the property of molten ferrous solution which is considered very crucial. This percentage refers to the closeness of pores from each other. It can also be calculated as total number of pores in the product divided by total surface area of the product, multiplied by hundred. Better porosity percentage ensures better purification results. For molten ferrous purification this percentage within a range of 80-90% is considered ideal.

Compression strength: In order to gain cost effectiveness in the purification process, large volume of pig iron is liquefied for getting molten ferrous solution. Using bulk volume of this solution needs a heavy duty mesh with higher compression strength. When large volume of molten iron is treated through the mesh, it must have a good endurance, which is measured as compression strength. Ideal compression strength for this equipment is more or equal to 1 Mpa.

Bulk Density: Bulk density is another important property of this product. It ensures that this equipment maintains the exact density during operations. Higher or lower bulk density can result in poor performance of the material. In foundry filter bulk density of less than or equal to 0.5g per cm3 is considered to be ideal.

Thermal resistance: It is another crucial property of this useful product. Most metals are liquefied at a very high temperature. Therefore, filter must have a very higher thermal resistance in order to survive the heat of molten ferrous solution. Thermal resistance of 1300°C~R.T, 5 times is considered best for filters.

Most of these properties are very helpful in improving durability of this useful product.
