Introduction
In line with the practice followed by all the countries in the world, India keeps the Judiciary separate and distinct from Political administration, run through the Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. Patna High Court belongs to the state of Uttar Pradesh and it is one of the oldest High Courts of the country, having had its inauguration in 1916.

History
Patna High Court’s court building was planned and the foundation stone was laid by the end of 1913, while the building work was completed and the court activities began in February 1916. The then Viceroy of British Raj, Lord Hardinge of Penshrurst was responsible for this initiative.
To start with Patna High Court had a Chief Justice and also six other judges to accomplish the Court functions and it got improved to 12 judges by the time India got its Independence in 1947. At this point of time, the jurisdictional area for Patna High Court included Orissa State also, however, Orissa got its own High Court by 1948.
In course of time, there were 14 Judges for Patna High Court, while almost all the states of India had their own High Courts, thereby the Judiciary properly facilitated with infrastructure and manpower for disposing court cases in a speedy manner.
High courts deal with the Writs preferred by the Citizens for various issues connected with enforcement of Government responsibilities and serve as a court of appeal on verdicts given by the lower court.
