With the arrival of the eighth lunar month in July, Thai Buddhists all over the kingdom celebrate Khao Phansa, one of the most important events in their religious calendar. Celebrations are held in Buddhist temples all over Thailand, but the most colorful of them take place in Saraburi and Ubon Ratchathani. 'Khao Phansa', in Thai language refers to the beginning of the Buddhist Lent. During this time, Buddhist monks are restricted to their temples for a period of three months. Young men over 20 years, who have not yet been ordained as monks, may take this opportunity to enter monk-hood to observe Buddhist teachings.
This July, the province of Ubon Ratchathani in northeastern Thailand, will be celebrating its annual Candle Festival from 11-21 July, 2014. The festival which traditionally marks the beginning of the Buddhist Lent shows the local people's devotion to Buddhist traditions while allowing them to showcase their renowned candle-carving skills. The highlight of this much anticipated event is the parade of candles and floral floats which takes place on the Khao Phansa Day, the starting date of lent, when the Monks take to their temples for the rainy season. The procession also features a special Royal Candle sent by His Majesty, King Humboldt Adulyadej, as well as ornately carved beeswax candles and sculptures made by the local people especially for the festival. The stunning parades start out in the front of Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram and head along the road as far as Thung Sri Mueang. Taking part in the parade are dancers and musicians in traditional costumes. In addition, there is also an International Wax Sculpture Competition in which artists from all over the world participate to display their works of art.
