Digital IDs and Electronic Signatures

A digital ID is like an electronic passport or driver’s license that proves your identity. Electronic signatures are a means to make it easier to sign forms.

A digital ID usually comprises your name and email id, an expiration date, the issuing organization’s name, and a serial number. The use of Digital IDs is for certificate security and electronic signatures. Digital IDs contain two keys namely the public key which locks, or encrypts data and the private key which unlocks, or decodes that data. You use the private key to apply your electronic signature when signing PDFs. A certificate that is distributed by you to others has the public key. For example, you can send the certificate to those who wish to validate your identity or signature. Store your digital ID in a secure place, because it contains your private key that can be used by others to decrypt your information.

Most of the works done in PDFs does not need a digital ID. You don’t require a digital ID to create PDFs, edit them and comment on them. A digital ID is needed to sign a document or encrypt PDFs via a certificate. A third-party provider can provide a digital ID, or you can create a self-signed digital ID. Self-signed digital IDs can be sufficient for personal use or small-to-medium enterprises. Their use should be restricted to parties that have established mutual trust. A digital IDis required from a trusted third-party provider for most business transactions. Choose a certificate authority that is trusted by major business organizations doing business on the Internet because it is responsible for verifying your identity to others.

Using electronic signatures, the reader does not need a pen to sign a form and the form can be easily sent via email. The signer when approving or attesting a document is uniquely identified by this digital or electronic signature. An electronic signature, or e-signature, electronically indicates either that a person agrees with the contents of an electronic message. It is a stylized script associated with a person by comparison. In commerce and the law, the fact that the person adopts the intentions recorded in a document is indicated by a signature on a document. Both are comparable to a seal.

Digital signatures are increasingly used in regulatory filings and in e-commerce as digital signatures are safer than a simple generic electronic signature. In several nations, including India, the United States, the European Union, Australia and Brazil, electronic signatures have the same legal outcomes as the more conventional forms of executing of documents. An evolving form of electronic signatures for the purposes of contracts is called dynamic signature, or at times, confusingly labeled as biometric signatures. Many organizations have been targeting to launch applications on mobile handsets so that documents can be signed electronically while viewing documents on mobile phones.
