In an alternative America, all crime is legal for one night of the year. It keeps society ticking over, we're told, as dutiful citizens take to the streets to slaughter one another until the sun comes up. After that, it's back to normal for another year. "I've had it with this godforsaken holiday," proclaims one older character, in one of a handful of comments on American society's preoccupation with violence. In the best tradition of sequels, writer-director James DeMonaco opts to escalate proceedings rather than repeat them. When a group of ordinary people find themselves stranded outside on the worst night of the year, they come under the protection of a man on a mission of his own. He guides them coolly across town as they avoid marauding gangs, state-sponsored death squads, lone psychopaths and the upper crust, who have their own, even more disturbing Purge traditions. Rather than the claustrophobic original, which kept proceedings largely confined to one location, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is more of an odyssey along the lines of The Warriors and Escape From New York, except more polished than one and less cartoonish than the other. DeMonaco has previous when it comes to John Carpenter - he wrote the 2005 remake of Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. Frank Grillo in the role of haunted loner Leo has shades of Snake Plissken or a suburban Mad Max. It's not explored how exactly the annual purge benefits society, other than that people being allowed to "unleash the beast" one night a year keeps them in control for the rest of the year. They also settle scores, but it's the effect, not the cause that's on the table here. The message is concerned with how quickly and willingly people will turn on one another and begin killing simply because it's "their right". The subtext maybe isn't as far-reaching as the filmmakers would like, but at the end of the day, it's an action movie and there's more than a fair share of shoot-outs, set pieces and nervy twists. In between, such as when Leo and company take shelter in a friendly family's apartment, DeMonaco keeps things pacy with hand-held cameras and a tension suggesting that everything can explode at any minute. There's also plenty of scope to explore this world further, and one gets a distinct sense that DeMonaco and producer Michael Bay have plans to do just that. It might be interesting to explore the night from the view of those who 'support' the grisly idea, or the untouchable government officials who quite literally watch from their ivory towers. There's definitely franchise potential here, but the film's pulpy, B-movie sensibility is its main strength, and so the challenge will be to keep that while escalating proceedings accordingly.
