Unique Animals of Sunderbans National Park: Fishing Cat

Sundarbans National Park, located in southern part of the Indian state, West Bengal, is one of the largest deltas in the world formed by the rivers Brahmaputra, Ganga, and Meghna. It is spread over a vast area that covers 4,262 square kilometres and is surrounded by 885 square kilometres of buffer zone. This national park mainly consists of mangrove forests, and has different varieties of wild animals like swamp deer, water buffaloes, leopards, and Bengal tigers. Among the most endangered species found in this national park is the Fishing Cat, a medium-sized wild cat found in certain parts of Southeast Asia. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classified this wild animal as 'Endangered' in the year 2008. Fishing cats reside along the mangrove swamps, rivers, and streams. They are well-suited for such habitats and are skilled swimmers.

They are the largest among the cats belonging to Prionailurus family of wild cats found in Asia. Fishing cats are twice the size of domestic cats, and have a muscular build with short to medium legs. Their fur is olive-grey in colour, and has dark spots on them that run horizontally along the body. Face of a fishing cat is elongated, with a white underside and dark stripes around the throat. It has a number of black rings on its tail, while the spots can be seen across several portions of the body. Feet of these cats are not completely webbed as compared to leopard cats. Fishing cats are found mainly in wetlands like marshy areas, swamps, reed beds, mangroves, and tidal creeks. They are primarily nocturnal and solitary cats fond of swimming. Adults make a chuckling sound and their other calls bear a certain resemblance to that of domestic cats. Their main prey is fish, while they also enjoy preying on insects, small rodents, and birds. Waiting along the edges of watercourses, they catch their prey from the water by merely grabbing them, or in some cases, diving in to get them. Fishing cats are increasingly becoming rare owing to their dependence on wetlands. They are conserved in protected areas like Sunderbans National Park in recent times.

In West Bengal, these cats are called 'Baghrol' or 'Machbagha'. The word 'bagha' means 'tiger' and 'macha' means fish in the Bengali language. Visitors of Sunderbans get an opportunity to witness the fishing cats in their natural habitat. They can also explore other popular attractions located near the national park. Mangrove Interpretation Centre, located at Sajnekhali, has a small crocodile and turtle hatchery. One can also visit the Sajnekhali Watch Tower, a museum, and Bonobibi Temple, during their tour of the Sunderbans National Park. An accommodation in any of the best Sunderbans resorts would give them the required convenience in visiting the wildlife sanctuary and exploring its abundant wildlife. Modern facilities provided in such resorts would make staying in them a pleasant experience.
