The Value of Vehicle Corrosion Protection

Protecting your new vehicle from corrosion is very important. Once corrosion starts it can damage a vehicle dramatically. Certain parts including brake lines and others are slightly more susceptible to corrosive materials like road salt and should be especially protected. If your brake line becomes so severely rusted that it breaks open, you could be in some very serious danger. If you are not carefully inspecting the car's undercarriage and doing everything that you can to protect it, you might miss the warning signs.

There are a few simple things that you can do to protect your vehicle from corrosion. These tips are especially important to anybody who lives in cold and snowy areas where frequent road salting occurs, as well as anybody who lives near the ocean, an industrial farm or other areas where there is an increased risk of contact with corrosive materials. Wash the car very thoroughly; people in the Snow Belt will want to do this in the late fall before the first heavy frost happens. Pay careful attention to the underside of the vehicle while you are washing it. After the car has been dried it is time to apply wax and a wax sealant, again paying very careful attention to the underside. If you feel that you will not be able to get the car washed and waxed as needed you can have this done professionally. It is then important to follow this up with a full sealant for the undercarriage. You have the option to do it yourself with a recommended product or you can have this done by your local dealership.

There are additional things that you can do to protect your vehicle. While it is true that most auto makers are aware of the need to make their vehicles more corrosion resistant, there is still that risk especially in certain areas of the country. A new vehicle is expensive and it is important to do everything that you can do to protect it from the dangers of rust. When you are in the process of buying/financing your new vehicle you will be offered corrosion protection warranties. These are certainly worth considering especially if you are a person that does not make the time to properly wash and wax your car in the winter months.

The SRT corrosion protection is available in two plans. The first plan covers the Viper and offers a three year, unlimited miles, and limited warranty for corrosion protection on all sheet metal panels. The second covers the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger and the Dodge Charger and is a five year, 100,000 mile corrosion protection limited warranty on all outer body sheet metal panels.

The standard warranty from Dodge offers something similar with a five year, 100,000 mile protection plan for outer body sheet metal parts. All other parts are covered under the 36 month, no mile limit protection coverage. There are some restrictions to the Dodge plans. The plan will not cover corrosion that results from rock chips, accidents or other damages, abuse and unauthorized alterations. The restrictions also extend to hauling of corrosive materials which include items for commercial farming and other potentially damaging materials.
