Ooty is popularly known as Udhagamandalam. It is the capital of Nilgiris District. This hilly spot is a picturesque destination. It has been an enormously famous summer as well as weekend getaway since last many decades. Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary: This beautiful sanctuary is located at an approximate height of 1140 meters above the sea level. It is spread over the surface area of 321sq. kms. A wide range of habitats ranging from tropical even green forest to moist teak forest and swamps are easily found in this wildlife sanctuary. Barking Deer, Sambar, spotted deer, Wild Boar, Porcupine, etc. The avifauna in this wildlife sanctuary includes Minivets, Hornbills, Jungle Fowls, and Fairy Blue Birds etc. Some other picturesque spots in this sanctuary include the Moyar waterfalls, Thepakkad elephant camp and Ombetta swamp. This sanctuary opens daily at 7.00 am and closes at 6.00 pm.
Ooty Lake: It is situated at an approximate distance of 3Km from the Ooty city in the Nilgiris District. This artificial lake is spread out in an area of 65 acres. Made in the year 1824, this beautiful lake is surrounded by gigantic Eucalyptus trees. The water in this lake comes from different streams that run from various hills in this town. If your favourite pastime is photography, then you can get some amazing shots of water birds and mesmerising mountain ranges in the background.
You have an option to hire rowing boats, motor boats and paddle boats in this lake. In the surrounding area, you can also find an amusement park, which has a beautiful decorated mini train for kids. In the month of May, you can take part in boat races and a wide range of entertaining events that are organised for 2-3 days. If you prefer calm and tranquil place, then you should avoid visiting here during weekends.
The Mukkurthi Peak & National Park: Situated at a distance of approximately 40km from Ooty, this enchanting national park houses innumerable perennial streams. It is located on the Southern corner of the Nilgiris Plateau. You can find a wide range of flora and fauna in this national park. The interesting aspect of this national park is that it is home some immensely exciting wildlife.
Government Botanical Garden:
Laid out by Marquis of Tweedale, the then Governor of Madras in 1847, this ancient garden has been part of many historical events. This garden is spread out in an area of 22 acres. A 20 million year old fossil tree trunk is safely preserved in this garden. The flora in this garden is divided into six sections compromising of grass carpet, variety of ferns, fashioned beds laid beds, house ferns, orchids, nurseries, and multi-coloured flower plants.
