Young or old, rich or poor, vain or plain, woman all seem to love wearing necklaces.
Going back to ancient times, to places on all four corners of the earth, divided by ethnicity, language, class or religion, all woman, all over, love to adorn themselves with some form of decoration.
What is it that seems to be this common denominator among all woman the world over?
Is it vanity? Is it tradition? Is it the way it makes them feel? Is it one or more of these reasons or is it something entirely different? In some cultures woman are covered virtually from head to toe, in other cultures they are almost naked. Yet all women like to decorate themselves with necklaces, chokers, bracelets, anklets, rings, belly belts, toe rings, headgear, jewelry earrings and make up.
Was it something that began in ancient times and slowly evolved into what it is today, where not much thought is given to the origins of where this love for beautification stemmed from? And if we though about it, would we still be so willing to adorn ourselves with such splendour and colour.
The answer is YES!!!!! Of course we would. Why? Because we can! Because it makes us feel good and because when we see beauty, we feel beauty and when we feel beauty, we are beauty!
Long before necklaces for women became symbols of prestige, status and wealth, they were simply made for fun. While men were out hunting and women were gathering they found beauty on the everyday objects in nature such as shells and seeds, perhaps over time when they came across clay pits they fashioned beads out of the clay once they had finished making the more functional objects like bowls and ashtrays (just kidding about the ashtrays).
While over in Europe glass blowing was an art form and beads had been made to decorate the extravagant lifestyles and fashion won’t of the time, the two were bound to meet and beads were traded for land eventually. The finery of those beads blew the minds of the woman who had until then being using feathers and seeds and shells. Beads then became a huge part of the African culture and each tribe evolved their own unique way of communicating through intricate beadwork that told tales such a s who was married who was a virgin, which region they came from, if they had been widowed , heartbroken , become engaged , were out for revenge due to an unfaithful lover etc.,. But this was happening in Africa, long ago. Just as it was happening in the Americas.
Moving forward in time the necklace never lost popularity and it was an art form that could transform a woman's appearance just by the necklace she chose to wear.
The right necklace with a certain outfit can either compliment and enhance certain features or do the complete opposite.
A necklace, through simplicity can bring out a woman’s eye colour or enhance her cheek bones.
An intricately designed necklace can elongate a short neck or shorten a long one. An exquisite neck piece can turn a simple outfit into a masterpiece just one that is too busy and lose the beauty of a dress that has details that are lost when a necklace is unsuited. Necklaces made of quality beads can enhance a cheap outfit where a necklace made of pasted acrylic beads can make even the most expensive dress look tacky. A necklace needs to be chosen with care and worn with confidence.
