Mobility Scooters Tips on Troubleshooting

As a person who owns a mobility scooter, you are sure to understand that you cannot ensure its smooth functioning all the time. You may be doing whatever you can to keep it in good condition. Proper maintenance and regular inspection may be a part of your routine. When combined with the fact that mobility scooter is made to last, you are sure to feel confident of your constant companion.  Unfortunately, this is a false belief. Even the most reliable tools get damaged at times. This holds true also for your mobility device. But, you don’t have to panic when you see that your scooter is not working. Just follow the guidelines given below.

1.       Be aware of common problems

Make sure that you do your best to take care of a damaged scooter before calling a technician. However, do not go for major repairs if you feel that you are not an expert in it. Following are some of the troubles you may generally face here.

·         A damaged battery: Battery is the lifeline of your vehicle. For this reason, even the slightest damage to this unit may mean trouble for you. The most common among the general problems is having to recharge it after every ride. This may be due to some kind of a damage or old age. Prolonged use destroys its capacity. You have to replace your battery as per the instructions in the product documentation. Some dealers may ask you to go for a bigger one. But, understand that this would mean your scooter becoming heavier. This may even cause your battery to get spoiled fast.

·         Motor: The motors in personal mobility vehicles are designed to endure the pangs of heavy use. However, they too are not an exception to the general rule; everything gets spoiled after prolonged use. The motor in your vehicle may get damaged if you travel frequently on rough terrains. Wet areas too may cause trouble. Dirt and mud gets into it. Its functioning may not get affected all on a sudden. But, the machine becomes slow and may even stop working. Tires are the other things which cause malfunctioning of your power mobility device. It is true that solid tires last longer than pneumatic ones. But, know that they too are not free from wear and tear.

2.       Be mindful of electromagnetic interference

Know that personal mobility vehicles are prone to electromagnetic interference if kept near a radio or television. This may be the case if your scooter starts moving on its own or starts going in wrong directions.

Doing the following too would help you understand if you would be able to do something for your ailing mobility scooter.

(A)   Make sure that you are using only the charger approved by the manufacturer.

(B)   Make sure to replace your fuse if it happens to blow up. Negligence in the matter may affect your battery life.

(C)   Make sure to clean dirt from the driving axle when cleaning the vehicle.

(D)   Make sure that the drive lever is not in the neutral position when trying to drive. Your vehicle would not move if it is in a neutral position.

(E)    Check to see all plugs are securely connected if you find that your vehicle refuses to move at your command.

It is true that mobility scooters should be serviced at times. However, trying something on your own may help you avoid the expense.
