It a mythological fact that the name of Kolhapur originated from a demon spirit named Kolhasura whom Lord Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity killed. The last wish of Kolhasura was to name a city after his name. Though there are other believes also.

Main attractions include 85 feet long idol of Lord Gansha located at the Chinmaya mission, the famous statue of Tara Rani and the bronze statue of Dr. Ambedkar.
