Shelter dogs are long been a source of curiosity. People want to empathise with them but their own prejudices do not let them take the righteous paths. Many misconceptions about these dogs are in the minds of the people that do not let them own one of those. Not only sad but frustrating, people make decision on the basis of assumption that they will be inferior to the breeds found / bought from pet shop or breeder. The truth nothing but slightly be distorted a little bit. Most of the dogs are in shelter because they were abandoned in their dog kennels or left in Shelters for due to divorce, financial issues, moving to newer locations overseas and reasons like that. You might be the saviour of one of them.

Quest For a Shelter Dog

Important thing here to make a note of is the breed you are looking for and other preferences, if any? Now, we can take the important issue in hand. When you go in a Shelter, you will be looking for the one that suits you and your family well. It has been often seen that dogs also try to make out if you are the one with whom it would like to go. Often an instant ‘connection’ seems to be forming but be alert and see you find the right connection. Some tips:

-          Do not look for a lazy / sick-looking dog (runny eyes and nose)

-          Do not consider the fearful looking dog (he might be aggressive due to fear and may have developed a biting tendency

-          Ask for the background of the dog you think you like (where he was found, in what condition, etc)

-          Look for the shelter meticulously and if it is tended with care and hygiene

-          Ask if the dogs are neutered and vaccinated

-          Before you decide to take the dog to your home, bring your entire family to the dog (often they respond to different people differently)

-          Kind of nutrition or specific pet food they are getting or if they are on some kind of treatment

-          Bring a younger dog of opposite sex if you already have one in the home (it resolves the socialising issue to a great extent)

Do not forget to think of your lifestyle and if the newest member could make a match

The above given were some major points for your consideration when you will be bringing a dog from shelter. They might have some behavioural issues that could be dealt with some training and your friendship. See, if you can make a dog’s life better by giving him home!
