I didn't think I would have this much fun with a thermometer but once I opened this thermometer I found myself using it for all sorts of things.
I keep it in a kitchen drawer most of the time so far. I primarily cook with cast iron cookware in the kitchen and if you've ever used cast iron you know it takes quite awhile to preheat and to get the temperature right can be a little finicky. Too hot, it burns, too cool, things tend to not cook right, stick, etc. This thermometer takes most of the guesswork out of the equation. I just put the pan on, set the temp and come back and use this to take a temperature reading. since I have an electric cooktop, it can is useful so I know if I want a pan at 300 degrees, I can set the knob here, and I know in about 5 minutes I will be good to go! cool! Since I have this thermometer, I can have a good idea where I need to set the knob to get my desired temperature (that way, if I don't feel like getting the thermometer out next time, I know at least where the knob needs to go -- cool... er.. hot! :) )
Another thing I like to do is fry using a deep fryer. This device works perfectly for checking my hot oil temp. We had a close call before when we set the temp too high on a deep fryer and the oil got past its smoke point. We were afraid we were going to burn the kitchen down! I've always heard of grease fires, so it definitely had us worried when we saw the fryer smoking like crazy. This device comes in handy to make sure the oil doesn't get out of control. Also, when frying with different oils, you want to make sure you know the smoke point, so this can keep you frying safely.
I haven't tried it yet, but I want to try and use this thing for chocolate too. I hear it works well for that and I think it would be fun to use this thing to assist in making chocolate covered fruit, etc to stick in the freezer.
It's also useful for making sure the air registers in my house are pumping out cool air like they should be. Or hot air in the winter.
I also use it to check the temperature of my girlfriend for fun. haha. She's a hottie! lol ;)
So far, in the short while I've had this device, I've been having lots of fun and finding it very handy and useful.
