DEF, also referred to as Diesel Exhaust Fluid helps in bringing about a reduction in nitrous oxide emissions or NOX acting as additive to diesel fuel. There are many types of diesel engines that are in use today. In some of these diesel engines that were manufactured after 2010, DEF pump needs to be added to the fuel. It is significant to note that this DEF is non toxic, organic compound which consists of 67.5 percent DI water and 32.5 percent urea.
DEF is added to the diesel exhaust in a SCR or Selective Catalytic Converter system. This is done with a catalyst’s presence that helps in converting smog producing water vapour and harmless nitrogen from nitrogen oxide. The purpose of the exhaust is to absorb emissions and these emissions are then required to meet new emission standards that are stricter than the earlier standards offered by EPA for new vehicles with diesel engines. These standards came into force on
January 1st, 2010. Diesel trucks that are now coming into existence come fitted with DEF storage tanks that are on-board and ranges in capacity from 16-30 gallons. This is done in order to meet newly set regulations. SCR or Selective Catalytic Converter system comes with a necessary requirement. This requirement is regarding continuous refilling of storage tanks.
