Breast Augmentation – Important Information for Before And After Surgery

Breast augmentation is an invasive procedure that artificially enlarges the breasts.  A silicone or saline implant is inserted through an incision.  Depending on the patient, there are a variety of areas that an incision can be made: underneath the breast, the border of the areola, armpit or belly button.  Although breast augmentations are one of the most popular surgical procedures and few patients experience complications, it is important to understand what to expect before and after surgery.

Things to consider prior to surgery:

•    Types of implants- One of the first aspects of your surgery to determine is which type of implant you would like.  The implants may be filled with silicone or saline.  Silicone implants are prefilled with a thick gel, which feels like real breast tissue and saline implants are filled with sterile salt water after being inserted.  Silicone implants provide a natural feel but are very expensive and require periodic checks.  Although your surgeon will provide you with guidance for which implant to use, the ultimate decision of implant selection is in the hands of the patient.

•    Advice from the surgeon- No individual better understands your physical and structural health other than your surgeon.  Their experience and examination can give you a fair idea about whether the surgery is suitable for you or not.  A well-experienced surgeon will be able to provide you insight about your procedure and give advice on which type of implant to use and what size to opt for.

Things to consider post surgery:

•    Proper care- Your surgeon should give you proper guidance about initial and after surgery precautions and care.  They will give you healthcare tips to ensure full success of the treatment.  Therefore, after surgery, all tips from the surgeon should be followed strictly.

•    Routine checkup- After your procedure you will need to return to your surgeon in order to remove any stitches and to ensure that you are properly healing.
