Visit the wonderful town in the district of Haridwar- Roorkee


 

Situated in Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, Roorkee is spread over the flat terrain with the awesome spectacle of the Himalayan range flanking in the north and north east. Roorkee is a wonderful city town and is located on the national highway 58. The city is 30 kilometres away from Haridwar and situated along the banks of Ganges River. The name of the city is derived from Ruri, the wife of tribal chieftain of the Rajputs. The municipality of the city was formed in the year 1868 and became the home for Bengal Sappers and Miners in the year 1853. These days the place is home to a large army base and is the headquarters for Bengal Engineering Group and Centre. The development of the city began with the establishment of the Roorkee Engineering College which was initially formed to train the local people in civil engineering works for the upper Ganga canal. The college was formed in the year 1847 and was later renamed as Thomason College of Civil Engineering after the governor of the north western province. The governor was behind the constitution of the college. The college was later upgraded as the University of Roorkee and then in the year 2001 the college was turned into one of the IITs, IIT Roorkee. Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari is long festival which runs for 15 days and is held at the dargah known as the Sakar Sabir Pak. Other than the IIT there are many other important educational institutes, named as College of Engineering Roorkee, Roorkee institutes of Technology, Roorkee institutes of Pharmacy, Roorkee institute of Management Science and Bishambhar Sahai Law institute. The presence of these important institutes in the city attracts hundreds of students not only from India, but also from all over the world. Summer Holidays in Roorkee is worth a visit. ·         IIT Roorkee: The famed technical institute of Asia formed in the year 1847, the institute was initially formed to train local people for the canal, and today the institute educates hundreds of students for the global challenges.

·         Crystal World: If you are up visiting institutions in the city and want to have some fun, head straight to the Crystal world. This place is the largest amusement park in the region. Enjoy water sports and fun rides in this place. This place remains quite busy in the summers and has constantly rising in the popularity graph.

·         Solani Aqueduct: This was formed in the year 1846 by the Britishers. It is one of the major engineering creations in the state. It is made on the Solani River and is a quite a piece of work.

·         Piran Kaliyar Sharif: It is referred to as Sabir Pak. It is the mazaar of Ahmad Sabir, a respected Sufi saint of the 13th century. The place is wholeheartedly welcomed for all the devotees as it is believed to heal problems of all people by mystical powers.
