The governor was behind the constitution of the college. The college was later upgraded as the University of Roorkee and then in the year 2001 the college was turned into one of the IITs, IIT Roorkee. Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari is long festival which runs for 15 days and is held at the dargah known as the Sakar Sabir Pak. Other than the IIT there are many other important educational institutes, named as College of Engineering Roorkee, Roorkee institutes of Technology, Roorkee institutes of Pharmacy, Roorkee institute of Management Science and Bishambhar Sahai Law institute.
