Reviewing The Types Of Workers Compensation Benefits

Workers compensation varies between states, but it ultimately provides employees with similar benefits. Many workers compensation plans cover medical care, disability and rehabilitation. It provides coverage for people who have become sick from working on the job.

Dependent family members of employees who were killed on the job are also eligible for workers compensation benefits. They're usually eligible for death benefits.

But, while there are other benefits of workers compensation, medical expenses, rehabilitation expenses and death benefits are the main ones. In this article, we're going to take a closer look at the aforementioned benefits.

Medical

Medical benefits provided by workers compensation covers hospital and other medical expenses, particularly expenses necessary for providing an injured or sick employee with treatment. These expenses typically cover doctor visits, surgeries and prescription medications. People who need special equipment, such as wheelchairs, may have those costs covered, as well. Some plans will provide coverage for physical therapy, counseling and alternative treatments like acupuncture, but it varies.

State laws determine whether the employee or employer selects the employee's health care provider. Some states also regulate how much the health care provider can charge for treatment.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation benefits cover medical and therapeutic care like physical therapy, which is used to help an injured or sick employee cope and recover. These benefits also cover training for employees who may need to relearn skills or learn new skills before returning to work.

It also covers tuition and other expenses for people who can't return to their former job. This coverage allows them to gain the skills necessary to become qualified for work at another job.

Disability

Disability benefits mainly compensate people who may lose wages while they're out injured or sick. Four types of disability benefits exist: partial temporary and permanent disability benefits and total permanent and temporary disability benefits.

Partial benefits

Partial benefits cover employees who are unable to perform parts of their job while they're injured or sick.

Temporary partial disabilities cover employees when they're unable to work for a limited amount of time. Permanent partial disabilities partially prevent people from performing their work.

Total benefits

Total benefits provide coverage for employees who can't work for a limited amount of time or if they can't return to work at all.

Temporary disabilities only prevent injured or sick employees from doing parts of their job for a limited amount of time, providing coverage during that particular time period. Whereas permanent disabilities are given to employees who can't return to work because of their illness or injury.

People who have any type of disability resulting from their injury or illness are entitled to receive some type of workers compensation benefits. These benefits are typically based on the amount of wages the employee earned before the onset of their illness or the time of the injury.

Death

Workers compensation programs, including that of federal workers compensation, often provide death benefits to family members of deceased workers who died on the job, particularly if they were financial dependent on that person. The benefits mainly provide dependent family members with compensatory financial support in the case of the death of their loved one.

Many states calculate their benefit as a percentage based on the deceased's earnings at the time of their death. While some states provide a lump sum payment, others have minimum or maximum amounts. Other workers compensation programs, such as federal workers compensation, also provide death benefits for family members and other dependents of deceased workers.
