Digital Signature Certificate is an electronically encrypted form of data used to validate identity of an user on different authentication platform over the internet. It can be applied to different messages, mails and documents to maintain its security, confidentiality and non-repudiation. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) can be obtained from one of the Certifying Authority approved and recognized by Controller of Certifying Authority (CCA). Digital Signature Certificate are categorized into 3 Classes i.e Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. These are classified on the basis of level of security.

Class 1 Digital Signature Certificate is having lowest level of security which only confirms Name and Email address of user with Certifying Authority database. It is only issued to individual users.

Class 2 Digital Signature Certificate is the middle level of security. It is used on various applications like e-filing a document, e-signing of message, mail and document, income tax return e-filing. It is also used to sign Form 16/16A and MCA (ROC) online form e-filing, employee provident fund transfer and by some of the e-tendering departments. Class 2 is further divided into Class 2A and Class 2B category which are on the basis of “Type of User”. Class 2A DSC mainly issued to individual User whereas Class 2B issued to company user in two validity 1 Year or 2 Years. Class 2 DSC Can be issued in Signing ONLY & Signing & Encryption Both Certificates.

Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate is the highest level of security used to verify identity of the user in different authentication process. E-Tendering, e-Procurement, e-bidding and e-auction are the some the main applications which can be authenticated using the DSC. These days most of the e-tendering companies are using Class 3 DSC for authentication during e-tendering process. Because it provides high level of security, transparency and integrity during secure transactions. It is also categorized in two categories i.e. Class 3A and Class 3B. Class 3A is basically used to Individuals for e-Ticketing, Trademark e-Filing and Class 3B is used in different type of electronic procurement and transaction to company Users. DGFT Digital Signature Certificate is the special type of Class 3 DSC. DGFT DSC is issued to EXIM Organizations to apply Advance License and Other Related works on DGFT Websites.
