Dwayne Kent Singleton was born San Antonio, Texas, grew up Galveston, and today lives in League City. He received his education at Texas State University, where he earned a degree in Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1984. In the years since then, Dwayne Kent Singleton has led an outstanding career as a dedicated and highly regarded oil and gas industry professional.
Galveston is a city on the Gulf of Mexico consisting of Galveston Island and Pelican Island, and growing up there has left Dwayne Kent Singleton with a lifelong love of the ocean. He remembers watching many boats, yachts, and other ships pass through the Port of Galveston as a child. Galveston was known then as the inspiration for a popular song written and performed by Glen Campbell.
After spending much of his childhood watching ships sail along the shores of his hometown, Dwayne Kent Singleton became a member of many ship crews himself. The work helped him pay for his college education. During those years, Dwayne Kent Singleton could often be found aboard a yacht, competing in Billfish tournaments.
Billfish is a general term referring to a group of predatory fish that are highly sought after by sports fishermen, like sailfish and Blue Marlins. Dwayne Kent Singleton remembers that sports fishermen like going for billfish because hooking one and then reeling it in is usually a huge struggle that can take hours. Billfish are most often found in tropical and subtropical waters, like those in the Gulf of Mexico, but they can be found all over the world. Dwayne Kent Singleton says that billfish are the most in-demand recreationally fished variety of game fish in North America.
Working his way through college by participating in Billfish Tournaments was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Dwayne Kent Singleton. While no longer a fisherman, Dwayne Kent Singleton still loves the ocean and often visits many coastal cities on family trips.
Dwayne Kent Singleton also has many happy memories of surfing the coastal waters around Galveston. Sometimes people are surprised to hear that surfing is popular there, because the common notion is that there aren’t many good waves along the Gulf coast. But growing up there, Dwayne Kent Singleton learned that there is plenty of good surfing if you know where to find it. But it’s also true that the best places tend to be downplayed by surfers there, who want to keep them for themselves.
